AGEC law: sorting biowaste is now mandatory
One year ago, the AGEC law made sorting biowaste compulsory for everyone in France.
This law stipulates that every citizen must have "at his disposal a solution enabling him not to throw away his bio-waste", so that it can be recycled. It requires municipalities to offer their residents a sorting solution (local management or separate collection of biowaste).
Biowaste accounts for a third of all French household waste. A valuable resource, biowaste can be recycled into materials (compost) or energy (biogas). At present, biowaste is mainly landfilled or incinerated, highly polluting processes. It generates considerable greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane.

One year on: 4 out of 10 French people do not sort their bio-waste
A lack of knowledge
One year on, the "SEPUR Barometer: The French and their garbage cans" carried out by the Ifop Group is revealing: lack of knowledge represents a major obstacle to the adoption of biowaste sorting by French households, more than a lack of will.
⛔ 4 out of 10 French people are still unaware of this obligation one year on.
❓ Nearly half (48%) admit to lacking information on good waste sorting practices.
📱 69% would be willing to use a mobile application dedicated to waste sorting (to find out about sorting instructions, collection days in their commune or the location of voluntary drop-off points, for example).
Encouraging signs
However, there are other encouraging signs:
♻️ 6 out of 10 French people sort their biowaste, an increase of 8% compared with 2023.
👍 72% of those surveyed believe that sorting biowaste will easily become part of their daily routine.
🏙️ 67% feel that their local authority is doing enough to sort waste.
🌍 63% believe that the obligation to sort bio-waste is an opportunity for the environment.
