How do you water your plants during the vacations?

As the vacations approach, the question of watering plants becomes a real headache for plantaddicts! Discover our tips for keeping your plants hydrated while you're away.

Prepare your plants before leaving on vacation

Before you leave, here are a few things you should do:

  • Keep the soil well hydrated: water your plants the day before you leave. This will enable the soil to retain moisture longer. Be careful not to over-water, as you don't want them to be rotten when you return!
  • Mulch the soil: add a layer of mulch (straw, wood shavings or green waste) at the foot of your plants to keep the soil cool and reduce water evaporation.
  • Place your outdoor plants in the shade.
  • Group your plants together to create a humid microclimate.

Watering your plants while you're away: what are the solutions?

There are several ways to water your plants while you're away:

Ollas or oyas

These terracotta water reservoirs can be planted or buried alongside your plant. Once filled, the ollas gradually release water to the roots. They come in different sizes, depending on your plants' water requirements.

Autonomy: Ollas guarantee autonomous watering for 7 to 15 days.

Cost: Count between 20 and 70 euros each, depending on the size of the olla.

Water reserve pots

Pots and planters are available with a water reservoir. Simply fill the reservoir before you leave. Your plant's potting soil will gradually absorb what it needs.

Autonomy: These self-contained pots provide autonomy of 1 to 2 weeks.

Cost: Depending on size, material and design, pots cost between 20 and 50 euros each.

Drip irrigation

This system guarantees automatic watering during your vacations. Once installed, you can program the watering times using a timer. Economical and ecological, micro-irrigation cuts water consumption in half. However, this system requires time to install and regular maintenance (especially to detect leaks).

You can opt for surface or underground watering.

Autonomy: Throughout your vacations.

Cost :

  • Surface watering: 3 to 6 €/m².
  • Underground watering: €25 to €40/m², labour included.
  • Programmers: €35 to €250, depending on functionality.

Returned bottles

It's the DIY emergency solution! Fill a bottle with water and plant it upside down at the foot of your plant.

Autonomy: The bottle is usually empty within a few days.

Cost: Free of charge.

Plantsitters

If you're away for a long time, ask a neighbor, relative or professional to come and water your plants.

Cost: Expect to pay between €10 and €20 an hour for a professional plantsitter.
