How to recycle watermelon rinds?

In summer, there's nothing better to cool off than a chilled watermelon! 🍉💦 

When you prepare your watermelon, the rinds usually end up in the garbage can or in the compost. Don't throw them away, there are many ways to recycle them. This way, you limit your waste, save money and do good for the planet! 💪

When cooking watermelon rinds, choose organic watermelons to avoid pesticides! Otherwise, remember to wash the rind well beforehand with baking soda and hot water.

🍯 Watermelon peel jam

Cut 1 kg of peel into thin strips. Place in a saucepan with 1 kg sugar, a little water and the juice of one lemon.

Cook for 40 minutes until jelly-like. Blend if necessary.

Now all you have to do is put it in pots!

This jam is perfect with toast, pancakes or yoghurt.

🥒 Watermelon peel pickles

Remove the thin green skin from the peel with a vegetable peeler and cut the rest into small cubes.

Bring 30 cl of cider vinegar to the boil with 3 spoonfuls of caster sugar and spices (ginger, cinnamon, cardamom...). Add the watermelon skins and cook for 3 minutes.

Place in a clean jar, seal and chill for at least 24 hours.

Enjoy as an aperitif, as a side dish (with meats, for example), or as a garnish for salads or sandwiches!

🥣 A watermelon peel gazpacho

Remove the thin green skin from the rind and dice the white flesh. Blend with half an onion and a clove of garlic.

Add 2 large tomatoes, basil, 5 tablespoons olive oil, salt and pepper. Blend to desired texture, adding a little water if necessary.

Refrigerate for at least an hour. Serve chilled for a refreshing summer treat!

🍬 Candied peel

Cut the white flesh of the peel into thin strips. Boil in 1L of water until tender.

Bring 1L of water to the boil with 400g of sugar.

Add the peels to the syrup and simmer for about 30 minutes, until translucent.

Drain the candied peel and leave to cool. Store in an airtight jar.

A delicious, chewy treat!
