To grow blond oak leaf lettuce: Make sure it doesn't run out of water. If it wilts as it grows, water it! Plant vertically, in part shade.
How to harvest? In 3 different ways:
- Wait until it has formed a fleshy heart and cut off at the base.
- Remove the largest leaves as you go.
- Cut every 5 weeks, leaving 4 cm of leaves at the base.
In mixed salads, romaine is the basis of the famous Caesar salad! If you've harvested it ripe and fleshy, it can be cooked like braised endive.
You can compost the base and roots.
