What is compost tea?
In the process of breaking down biowaste, your vermicomposter creates compost, of course... But it also produces a valuable liquid fertilizer. This is lombrithé, a brown liquid. It's also known as compost tea or leachate.
The activity of the worms and microorganisms in the compost releases the water contained in the organic waste. This water passes through the vermicompost and becomes loaded with nutrients .

How and when to harvest earthworms?
Harvesting your worm tea couldn't be easier.
In our Ceercle composter, harvest the worm tea from the container located in the base of the composter. There are other models of worm composters where the worm tea is harvested using a tap at the bottom of the composter.
Your vermicomposter regularly produces vermicompost. You can harvest it every week. To avoid overflowing, remember to harvest regularly !

How to use compost tea
In irrigation water
Compost tea is a natural fertilizer for your plants. It's rich in nutrients, which your plants need for healthy growth. It's an excellent alternative to chemical fertilizers.
Beware: earthworms are highly concentrated. Used undiluted, it would be harmful to your plants. You need to dilute it: dilute 1 volume of lombrithé in 9 volumes of water in your watering can.
You can use it once a month to water your green plants, or once a week for your vegetable plants. Your plants will thank you!
Foliar spray
You can also spray the leaves of your plants with diluted earthworm compost to fertilize them.
As a natural detergent
But that's not the only use for compost tea. In a more original way, it's a natural detergent. Pour it down your drains to keep them clean.
How to store compost tea?
If you harvest more earthworm than you use, you can store it in a glass bottle. Keep it away from heat and light. After two weeks, it will begin to lose nutrients (source: Vers la terre).
If not, consider sharing it with your family and friends, or with shared gardens and gardening associations, which will be delighted to put it to good use!
Now you know all there is to know about vermicomposting. Now you can turn your peelings into natural fertilizer in your vermicomposter!
