5 ways to recycle cherry pits and stems

Say goodbye to waste and hello to zero waste!

Here are 5 simple, economical and ecological ideas for reusing cherry pits, leaves and stems.

🛌 A cherry pit hot water bottle

Once carefully cleaned, cherry stones can be used as a hot water bottle to warm your bed or relieve muscular pain.

Here's our little DIY:

  • Cleaning: Place cherry pits in a pan of boiling water with a tablespoon of baking soda. Boil for 5 minutes to clean them thoroughly.
  • Drying : Drain the pits and spread them out on a clean cloth. Leave to dry for at least 24 hours, ideally in the sun. They must be perfectly dry before moving on to the next step.

Now it's time to sew on the container:

  • Fabric assembly: Take two rectangles of fabric. Place them together, right sides together. Sew the edges together, but leave an opening of about 10 cm on one side so that you can turn the hot water bottle inside out and fill it.
  • Shaping: Turn the fabric right side out so that the seams are on the inside. Press carefully to flatten the seams.
  • Filling: Fill the hot water bottle with cherry pits to the desired quantity. Don't forget to leave a length of fabric to close it.

Heat it in the microwave or on a radiator to enjoy its comforting warmth.

Ceercle tip Ceercle placed in the freezer, it can also be used as a cold compress to soothe bruises or inflammation.

🍃 A wellness infusion (leaves or tails)

Make infusions with cherry leaves and stems! Discover two recipes with different properties.

Leaf tea is an infusion that aids drainage and intestinal cleansing. Boil around 60 g of cherry leaves in 1 liter of water for 6 minutes, strain, then drink 1 to 3 cups a day.

Stalk tea is detoxifying and diuretic.

  • After picking, run the tails under water and dry them on a tea towel.
  •  Infuse 1 teaspoon of dried tails in 30 cl of boiling water for 5 to 10 minutes.

🥧 Eco-friendly cooking beads

In the kitchen, cherry pits are a perfect substitute for ceramic or stainless steel balls when baking pie shells! Once they've dried well, place them on the pastry before baking to prevent it from puffing up.

Practical and reusable, simply store them in a cotton bag or glass jar for your next bake-off. A zero-waste, economical and natural tip!

🌱 A natural mulch for the garden

In large quantities, cherry pits make excellent mulch.

Spread them at the foot of your plants to limit weed growth, conserve moisture and keep the soil cool.

Unlike other mulches, they do not acidify the soil. Thanks to their density, they resist wind and runoff.

🧴 Homemade flavored vinegar

With summer just around the corner, we know that mixed salads are back! So why not add a little pizzazz to your recipes with our cherry-flavored vinegar?

  • Place pits in a clean jar and cover with cider vinegar.
  • Add a few teaspoons of sugar, a pinch of salt and a few peppercorns.
  • Leave to infuse in a dark place for several weeks, tasting regularly.
  • Strain, then transfer to a clean bottle.

An original vinegar, ideal for seasoning seasonal dishes!
